The Worrying Mental Health of our Healthcare Workers

Just the other day, I was sitting at a computer with a coffee, trying to refocus after lunch. But the conversation next to me was pulling me in.
Two of the nursing assistants were sharing a screen, scrolling through the condolences page of our intranet site. As they scrolled, they verbally checked off who they knew (or heard it rumoured) had died by suicide.
I was stunned, in two completely different ways.
Firstly, I was stunned by how casually they were in talking about the apparent suicides of our colleagues.
Secondly, I was shocked by how many suicides there apparently were.
There were a couple of names and faces I knew on that list. People who I’d worked through the pandemic with.
Now that our jobs were back to normal again, it seemed such a shame that, for these people, their much longed-for time back in their normal hospital roles wasn’t a happy time for them.
