I think I’m getting to the point where I can call myself a pro at managing my own depression. I’m 41, and I’ve spent more than half of my time on Earth so far fighting the good fight.

Overtime, we all become experts at helping ourselves. So what follows isn’t a one-size-fits-all prescription for fighting depression. Rather, it’s the things I’ve found to help me the most.

We are each as unique as we are similar — so something will resonate with you, and other things won’t. That’s fine. Take what you need and go do you.

What inspired me to share

I had my first full on breakdown at the age of 21. My most recent was over 11 years ago now. I feel that I’ve found a safe balance in knowing when I need to talk, knowing when I need some pharmaceutical help, and knowing when I just need to rest in nature.

Yesterday I read a post in a Facebook group where somebody else was asking for insights on kicking depression’s butt. I loved the way he worded it, and I felt the need to share.

But I couldn’t distill everything I wanted to say into a Facebook post comment. So here we are.
