Embrace Life While You Can

As a healthcare worker and an ultra runner, I am fairly obsessed with my health.
On the one hand, I live for those endurance events that test the very fabric of our being. Then on the other hand, I work in a hospital where I see life and death every single day.
Some patients amaze and inspire me with how well they bounce back from major trauma or sudden illness. Other patients remind me how privileged I am to have my health, when I see how theirs has left them without their independence.
From this vantage point, I probably think more about my mortality than I probably should. But I also think a lot about the importance of grabbing life by the handles and living the heck out of it.
Little reminders
We all get these little reminders from time to time. Some are fleeting moments, like narrowly missing being hit by a bus, then considering how lucky you were to escape a life-changing injury. But all too often, we forget this feeling within minutes, distracted by the ‘real world’ noise.
We leave that big picture thinking, and get reabsorbed in the daily grind.
